Who Is Mark Zuckerberg?

Posted by admin on October 22nd, 2009

A glance at Time Magazine’s list of The World’s Most Influential People in 2008 will show you Mark Zuckerberg in 52nd place out of a list of 101. Who is Mark Zuckerberg, though? You might be more familiar with him as the founder and current CEO of Facebook.

Together with two roommates, Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook, the worldwide social networking phenomenon, from his dorm room at Harvard University back in 2004. From that point, the website has gone on to achieve astounding success, rising to become the most popular social networking website in the world, dethroning longtime champ MySpace.

Today, Mark Zuckerberg continues to work as the CEO of the company he founded and continues to work on ways to improve the platform. For instance, in 2007, the Facebook Platform was launched, which provides programmers with the tools needed to make applications for users of Facebook.

Today, this has become an integral part of the website and offers users the chance to interact through games, quizzes, tests and much more. It has also benefited advertisers, though this has drawn some controversy. Currently, Zuckerberg rates within the Forbes 400 richest people in the US, and Facebook continues to enjoy unprecedented growth.

What Is Web 2.0 and Social Networking?

Posted by admin on October 22nd, 2009

The advent of Web 2.0 is responsible for the modern Internet. What is Web 2.0? How did this development affect social networking? In order to understand this development, you’ll need to know a bit more about Web 1.0.

Back in the early days, the days of Web 1.0, the Internet was a very different place. It was filled with stagnant images, and lots and lots of text. In fact, the early web was a pretty boring place, with very little interactivity. Most consumers, if they were on the web at all, had their own website, though these were clunky, unwieldy things – and social networking did not exist at all.

The desire for social networking was one of the driving forces behind the advent of Web 2.0. Actual results included blogging, interactive relationships online, dynamic images, streaming video and most of what modern users take for granted.

With the development of Web 2.0 and the greater interactivity that came with better technology, social networking was born – thus Facebook came to the fore, though it was some years before it gained its current prominent position. Today, social networking is used by consumers and businesses around the world to connect, interact and even drive profitability.

What Is the Facebook Wall?

Posted by admin on October 22nd, 2009

Facebook is a fun place to hang out and engage with friends and family, as well as others that you might meet through groups and other venues. One of the most interesting aspects of Facebook is the Wall. What is the Facebook Wall? How do you use it?

The Facebook Wall is a very interesting thing, that allows you to leave comments to your friends, allows them to respond and more. The Wall is the place where status messages are displayed for the public to see (if you’ve got your settings programmed that way, of course), as well as where your quiz results, game scores, and group memberships are listed.

Where do you access your Wall? If you’re logging into Facebook, don’t expect to see a tab labeled “Wall” on the homepage. You’ll actually need to visit your profile to find the Wall. Clicking on the Wall tab here will show you what is displayed to those who find your profile through a search (if you have this feature enabled).

In addition, you can delete things from your Wall should you find them offensive or simply not wish for others to see them, you can interact with friends through comments and more.

What Is The Facebook Beacon?

Posted by admin on October 22nd, 2009

Facebook is a tremendous resource for people all around the world, providing them with a fun environment in which to interact with family and friends in a global setting. However, there are some elements of Facebook that might concern some users. One of these things is the Facebook Beacon. What is this?

In essence, this piece of code works just as the name suggests. It actually tracks Facebook users as they surf the Internet, judging what they do on websites like eBay, Fandango, Overstock.com and many other websites. This information is then sent on to advertisers, enabling these advertisers to market directly to consumers interested in their offerings.

While Beacon is a great program for businesses of all sorts, most consumers don’t like the thought of their online actions being followed and monitored. While originally Beacon could not be opted out of, after considerable ruckus raised by Facebook users, the company now offers a way to turn off Beacon and go about your surfing in privacy. However, you’ll need to take steps on your own to disable this feature, as Facebook doesn’t exactly advertise its presence to those who use the service. Luckily, help can be found online.

What Is A Facebook Status Message?

Posted by admin on October 22nd, 2009

Facebook offers users a number of ways in which they can personalize their online experience and share more information with their friends and family. Games, quizzes, groups, networks and other features of social networking all help to create a more enjoyable environment. However, a Facebook status message is one of the most enjoyable aspects of using this particular social network.

What is a Facebook status message? It’s actually exactly what it sounds like. This is a spot on your profile where you can put in your current mood, thoughts, or what you’re doing at the moment. Many people choose to make amusing comments here, or to input what they are doing to help their friends and family keep up with their goings on.

A Facebook status message can be long or short, factual or comical. In fact, you don’t have to use them at all. They display on your profile, as well as on the news feed pages of those you choose to make friends in this environment. You’ll also find your friends’ status messages on your own news feed page, allowing you to keep up with what they are doing and thinking at the moment.
